The order of dominance for your different preferences is:
As a dominant sensor you will tend to pay close attention to the facts and details of your life. You place your trust in the information provided by what is tangible: what you can see, hear, touch, taste and smell. You are reality based and will be rooted in the here and now.
The ISTJ's sensing preference is introverted, so s/he will tend to reflect on the facts and details of life. The auxiliary preference is thinking, so an ISTJ is likely to be interested in research, where they can use their real-world knowledge in a logical, cause-and-effect way. ISTJs may also possess the ability to deduce and pursue oblique connections between 'facts'. In a partnership, an ISTJ will be conscientious, reliable and full of common sense. The emphasis in their interactions is likely to be on practical solutions and good organization. Unless similarly inclined, their partner is likely to be frustrated by the ISTJ's apparently invincible logic. The ISTJ is likely to be so involved with solving the current problem that s/he ignores future ramifications or any interpersonal conflict in a deadly (and sometimes deadly boring) atmosphere of 'rightness'. ISTJs keep their feelings to themselves and so can be seen as cold. A developmental goal for them might be to become more articulate with the feelings they undoubtedly have. The danger for ISTJs, obviously, is that they might miss the whole point of life while brilliantly measuring it in umpteen different ways. Under stress, the ISTJ will display the classic signs of burnout: pessimism, impracticality and ill-will to others.
On the whole, however, the ISTJ is quiet, serious and well prepared for most eventualities. S/he is stable, conscientious, and an easy follower of established routines and procedures. Jobs for ISTJs include: Medical research, accountant, efficiency expert, government employee, military officer, bank examiner, estate planner, school principal, teacher (sciences), electrician, engineer, law researcher, dentist, pharmacist, lab technician. |
